Do not size a combiner by nominal array power. Use the module Isc at the relevant site condition, the maximum series fuse rating and the inverter’s input limits. The box’s busbar, terminals, fuses, isolator and SPD must all be rated for the maximum DC voltage that can appear at the lowest expected temperature. A 1000 V label on the enclosure is not enough if a component inside is rated for a lower voltage or a different DC category.
Treat the assembly as a system. A combiner box brings together live DC conductors, stored energy and field wiring. Ask how the design prevents reverse current, provides isolation for service, maintains polarity, controls touch access and handles a fault without exposing the installer to an unsafe condition. If the inverter manufacturer requires a specific pre-charge, fuse, SPD or rapid-shutdown architecture, share that document with the box supplier before the drawing is approved.
Make the certification boundary explicit. A component certificate does not automatically certify the complete enclosure. Ask for the assembly-level declaration, design verification and routine-test record where the relevant standard applies. For an empty enclosure, do not assume that an IP rating proves the finished assembly’s thermal or electrical performance. For a complete box, do not accept a component certificate as a substitute for the panel build and wiring checks.

Questions PV combiner box buyers ask
Is a DC combiner box the same as an AC combiner box?
No. A DC combiner collects parallel PV strings on the direct-current side, before the inverter. An AC combiner collects one or more inverter outputs on the alternating-current side. The voltage, fault current, isolation, protection and enclosure requirements are different. A DC+AC box combines both functions but should be specified and tested as one coordinated assembly.
Can I use a 1000 V combiner box on a 1500 V array?
No. The maximum system voltage must be checked at the lowest expected temperature and compared with every component in the box. The enclosure, busbar, fuses, holders, isolator, SPD, terminals and wiring all need the correct DC voltage rating. A component with a lower rating can limit the whole assembly even when the label or enclosure says 1500 V.
Do I need fuses if the inverter has protection?
Not every array needs the same protection scheme. The module’s maximum series fuse rating, reverse-current risk, string count, inverter requirements and local installation code determine whether fuses, breakers or another arrangement are appropriate. Do not remove a fuse merely because the inverter has an internal protection function. Ask the inverter and box manufacturers to confirm the coordinated design in writing.
What is the difference between IP65 and an outdoor rating?
IP65 describes protection against dust ingress and water jets under defined test conditions. It does not by itself establish UV resistance, corrosion resistance, impact strength, temperature suitability or suitability for a particular installation. Ask for the enclosure material, IK rating, UV exposure information, operating-temperature range and the installation instructions for the exact model.
Does an AFCI combiner box replace rapid shutdown?
No. AFCI addresses arc-fault detection and interruption; rapid shutdown is a separate function intended to reduce hazardous voltage in defined areas. A combiner may include one, both or neither. State the requirement explicitly and ask for the relevant model evidence and compatibility with the inverter and module layout.
Can an empty enclosure be certified as a complete combiner box?
No. An empty enclosure may have its own IP or mechanical rating, but the completed assembly has different electrical, thermal and fault-related considerations. Ask for the assembly drawings, component ratings, internal separation and routine-test records for the finished box. The applicable standard and evidence depend on the assembly and destination market.
